Abstract

The pedagogy of tertiary education is undergoing significant transformations in response to emerging trends and innovations. With the advent of the fourth industrial revolution, there has been a paradigm shift in the educational system, prompting the need for new approaches to teaching and learning. The conceptual expository examines the various trends and innovations in teaching and learning in higher education. The study explores various emerging trends and innovations in higher education pedagogy, such as flipped classrooms, hybrid learning, and mobile learning. It also discusses the benefits of these approaches, including personalized and collaborative learning, which focus on student-centred learning rather than relying solely on teachers as the primary sources of knowledge. Additionally, the study identifies challenges such as the digital divide between students and teachers, as well as resistance to change. The paper submits that adopting digital tools may not necessarily enhance teaching and learning outcomes. However, unlearning and relearning how to use these digital tools in education can lead to effective learning and attainment of learning objectives. The paper suggests the need for educators to adopt and evolve their pedagogical practices tomeet the demands of the twenty-first century and prepare students for success in an increasingly complex and interconnected world. By exploring these emerging trends and innovations, this paper aims to contribute to the ongoing conservation of the future of tertiary
education.
